Foothills Fun at the Heart of Downtown Hickory
Nestled in the vibrant core of Downtown Hickory, Dive Bar Hickory sits right at 117 Government Ave. SW — and yes, that address puts you directly in the middle of one of North Carolina's most exciting small-city downtowns. In 2023, Travel + Leisure named Hickory the most beautiful and affordable place to live in the United States, and one visit to this neighborhood will show you exactly why.
The Neighborhood The Southwest Downtown Historic District is one of Hickory's most storied areas, featuring the landmark 1912 Hickory Passenger Depot, a Classical Revival U.S. Post Office from 1914, and the beloved Hickory Community Theatre — a building that has stood since 1921. Government Avenue SW sits at the crossroads of arts, commerce, and community in a district that has been the economic engine of the foothills region for over a century. Today, Union Square is the centerpiece — home to over 20 shops and restaurants, a weekly farmers market, summer concerts through the Sails on the Square series, and the annual Oktoberfest celebration.
A Brief History Hickory owes its name to a log tavern built in the 1850s beneath a hickory tree — one of the most charming origin stories of any North Carolina city. By 1863, a formal town was established, and the arrival of the Southern Railroad transformed it into a major trading hub. The area is known globally for furniture manufacturing, with the Hickory Furniture Mart operating for more than 50 years. The Hickory Crawdads (Single-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers) play nearby, and Lenoir-Rhyne University adds a steady college-town energy to the mix.
Parking Downtown Hickory offers free parking in multiple decks and surface lots throughout the district, including a conveniently located parking deck just steps from Union Square. Street parking is also available along Government Avenue and surrounding streets.
What Makes This Location Unique Dive Bar Hickory is family-friendly from open until 8 PM every day, making it a rare entertainment destination that works for a family afternoon AND a late-night hangout with friends. Two billiard tables, Skee-Ball, retro arcade games, a photo booth, claw machines, and darts fill the space. Karaoke nights bring the house down on select evenings. It's the kind of place that feels like it's been part of the neighborhood for decades — even though it keeps getting better.
